2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Comes After Poor Reception
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
The news follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full content from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the necessity for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to heart and overhauled the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our audience.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His guidance and background in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the recent years developing and managing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving him in the coming days. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
David
Experience of the New Leader
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch explains. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, gamble everything, and trust your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an announced debut schedule or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as creation progresses.
