Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
